Abstract

This paper deals with a study on the relation between logging output and tree and log dimensions, such as G.B.H. and mid-girth. The results of this study show that: within the dimensional range of trees and logs covered by the study, (i) Changes in the size of trees do not cause any significant change in the output for the work of felling trees. (ii) Output for the work of debarking, in terms of the volume of timber produced, increases with the increase in the girth of the logs. (iii) The work of cross-cutting and shaping of log has a maximum output at an optimum tree size. The works of felling trees cross-cutting, shapping and debarking of logs, when taken together, also show the above trend.

Abstract

This paper attempts to give, a brief and comprehensive account of the different measures and disciplines available at our disposal, for the rationalisation of wages, such as State Regulations, Work Study, Work Physiology, Job Evaluation and Incentive Schemes. The inter-relationships of these different disciplines in the field of wage fixation is brought out in the concluding part. Brief descriptions of a Job Evaluation and a Work Study-cum-Physiological Study, made with the help of the Forestry Commission of Great Britain, are a1so included.

Abstract

This paper deals with an experimental study conducted to investigate the influence or otherwise of the height of the transplants at the time of planting, on plantation performance in Eucalyptus tereticornis species. The study showed that the advantage in height growth of tall transplants over short. Transplants (within a range of 15 cm to 95 cm) persisted six months after planting out whereas there was no significant difference in height growth of the transplants of different heights after 37 months in the plantation. This indicates that the planting heights (within a range of 15 cm to 95 cm) influence the plantation heights during the early stages but the differences in height growth tend to even out in later years.

Abstract

This paper deals with an attempt at Rationalising the cost of establishment of Eucalyptus plantations in Kerala, by the application of Work Study techniques. As a result of this, a savings of 66.5% in expenditure could be indicated and effected. Besides, detailed job specifications for the different jobs were also formulated, which among other things, will help to stabilize the grounds for negotiating wages and fixing rates for works. These proposals have been implemented in Kerala State from 1971 onwards.
